Bachelor/Master Thesis: Adhesion optimization of polymer layer systems for implants (m/w/d)

The NMI Biomedical Micro and Nano Engineering working group at the NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute at the University of Tübingen is offering an opportunity for a bachelor or master thesis.

Your area of responsibility

The Biomedical Micro and Nano Engineering group is part of the Biomedicine and Materials Sciences department and develops, produces and tests microimplants for neuronal signal recording and stimulation. A wide range of equipment is available, including clean rooms, equipment for thin-film and microtechnology, assembly and connection technology as well as analytics (light microscopes, profilometers, AFM, SEM) and electrical measurement technology.

Subject of this thesis

With flexible microimplants, the adhesion between substrate and encapsulation material plays a decisive role in the durability and lifetime of the system. The materials used are often inert, which is why the use of adhesion-promoting methods (adhesion promoter, plasma treatment, post-processing, ...) is necessary.

In this context, you will

  • Develop, manufacture, and characterise test specimens which allow a comparison of the adhesion-promoting methods (lithographic design if necessary). Mainly the adhesion properties of parylene/polyimide and parylene/parylene systems shall be investigated
  • Design and build a test setup to quantitatively measure the specimens in 180° peel tests under humid conditions
  • If necessary, produce test specimens for long-term electrical tests and carry out respective tests

Requirements

  • Studies of microsystems engineering, electrical engineering, nanoscience, medical technology or related disciplines
  • Enthusiasm to work with and learn about the field of biomedical microtechnology
