Masterthesis (m/f/d) on the topic: Skeletal muscle-on-chip conceptualization and development in Reutlingen in Reutlingen

Excellent research with a view to practical application: That is our claim at the NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute in Reutlingen! We are a non-university research institute at the interface of biosciences and materials science. With our unique, interdisciplinary range of expertise, we are a strong partner in the field of research and development as well as by providing services for regional and international companies. Our services are aimed at companies in the healthcare industry as well as in vehicle, machine and tool construction and cover the broad spectrum of materials technology and quality control.

The μOrgano Lab focuses on the development, generation, and employment of microphysiological tissue models for biomedical and pharmaceutical research. We offer a position for a master student (min. 6 months) to develop a skeletal muscle-on-chip platform.

Your tasks

The project will involve designing microfluidic platforms, establishing novel embossing processes for hard plastics, as well as streamlining production of customizable soft connectors. At the end of the project, you will test your designed platform for biocompatibility and try to establish robust skeletal muscle fibre generation and culture.

Subject of this thesis

  • Design of the microfluidic platform

  • Establishment of fabrication methodologies (e.g. laser cutting, embossing, 3D printing etc.) using
  • different plastic materials, resins and polymers
  • Basic sterile 2D cell culture and chip-culture

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a master´s degree in Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomedical Technologies or similar

  • Experience with 2D and 3D design software (i.e. AutoCAD; SolidWorks)
  • Attention to detail and good organizational skills
  • Critical thinking and a problem-solving mind
  • Independent working style and pro-active
  • First experience in cell culture, microscopy and/or COMSOL is an advantage

We offer

  • Working within an exciting multidisciplinary project and a highly innovative research topic

  • Highly motivated, competent and multidisciplinary team with scientific and technical staff
  • An exciting and dynamic working environment in an application-oriented research institute
  • Excellent infrastructure and technical laboratory equipment
