Research Associate (m/f/d) biomedical research with the possibility to pursue a PhD (65%)

The NMI is a member of the Innovation Alliance Baden-Württemberg. It is involved in application-oriented research at the interface between life sciences and material science. An interdisciplinary team of scientists is developing new technologies for companies and public research sponsors in the areas of Pharma and Biotech, Biomedicine and Materials Science, and Material Analysis and Electron Microscopy.

The Biophotonics and Spectroscopy group at the NMI and the Department for Medical Technologies & Regenerative Medicine at the University of Tübingen focuses on the application of microscopic and spectroscopic methods in biomedical research, in particular for non-invasive imaging of 3D in vitro models. This research group offers a position as a research associate (m/f/d) with the possibility to pursue a PhD (start date: as early as possible):

Your tasks

Within the Wellcome LEAP program 'Human Organs, Physiology, Engineering (HOPE)' a modular microfluidic platform for the simulation and investigation of tumor-immune interaction will be developed. Here, phenotypic and metabolic changes of circulating immune cells as well as different 3D tumor tissue models will be investigated by real-time measurements and automatically tracked and evaluated. The scope of work includes:

  • Isolation, cultivation and characterization of immune cells
  • Implementation of in situ measurements (Raman/multiphoton/FLIM microscopy) of cells and 3D tissue models in microfluidic chips
  • Establishment of multivariate analysis models for marker-independent classification of cell types and characterization of tumor-immune interaction
  • Presentation and publication of research results

Requirements

  • Completed university studies in natural sciences or engineering
  • Previous practical experience in cell culture, microfluidics and/or microscopy is an advantage
  • First experience in multivariate data analysis and programming skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB, LabView) are desirable
  • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research activities (life science and engineering)
  • Very good knowledge of English as well as a structured, independent way of working
