Scientist (m/f/d) in Advanced Materials with the opportunity to earn a doctorate (65%)

The NMI is a member of the Innovation Alliance Baden-Württemberg. It is involved in application-oriented research at the interface between the life sciences and material science. An interdisciplinary team of scientists is developing new technologies for companies and public research sponsors in the areas of Pharma and Biotech, Biomedicine and Materials Science, and Material Analysis and Electron Microscopy.

The Advanced Materials group of Prof. Dr. Jannik Meyer studies how 2D materials can enable new functionalities by structuring, patterning and stacking 2D materials in new combinations – achieving additive manufacturing at the atomic scale.

In this research group, there is a vacancy for a scientist with the opportunity to earn a doctorate, starting as early as April 2023 (65%) with the following area of responsibility:

Your area of responsibility

Within the Clusters4Future project “nanodiag BW,” solid-state nanopores are being researched to enable detection and analysis of biomolecules such as peptides. Nanopores detect and analyze single molecules by electrical measurement during their passage through the nanopore. While biological nanopores are already used for DNA sequencing, the spectrum of synthetic materials and their properties make solid-state nanopores a promising technology for future biosensors.

Your tasks

  • Fabrication of nanopores in solid-state membranes by focused electron beam and focused ion beam milling
  • Analysis of nanopores by high resolution imaging (TEM, STEM), spectroscopic methods (EDX, EELS) and electrical measurements
  • Presentation of the project progress
  • Publication of research results

Requirements

  • Completion of a suitable degree in the natural or engineering sciences
  • In-depth knowledge of physics and chemistry at the nanoscale
  • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research (nanotechnology with biological applications)
  • Programming skills and a structured way of working

We offer

  • Working within an exciting multidisciplinary project and a highly innovative research topic
  • Highly motivated, competent and multidisciplinary team with scientific and technical staff
  • An exciting and dynamic working environment in application-oriented research institut
  • Excellent infrastructure and technical laboratory equipment
  • Free employee parking in the multi-storey car park
  • Work-life balance through flexible working hours  and mobile working
  • Attractive "bridge day" arrangement as well as paid days off on 24 / 31 December
  • Staff events and excursions
  • Salary according to the TV-L, 655, the contract is limited to 3 years
