The NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute in Reutlingen is a non-profit research institution and conducts application-oriented research at the interface of bio- and material sciences. It has a unique, interdisciplinary range of competencies for R&D and services for regional and international companies. The institute addresses both the health care industry and industrial sectors with materials technology and quality-oriented issues such as automotive and mechanical engineering.

The Organ-on-Chip group at the NMI and the Department of Microphysiological Systems at the University of Tübingen focusses on the development and application of microfluidic platforms that mimic the physiological microenvironment of cells and tissues. These Organ-on-Chip models can be used to answer a wide range of medical, biological, pharmacological and toxicological questions without having to use laboratory animals.

This research group offers a position as a Senior Postdoctoral Research Associate (m/f/d) biomedical engineering with a focus on immunocompetent Organ-on-Chip models.

Your tasks

The development and application of Organ-on-Chip models especially for the recapitulation of aspects of the immune system requires an interdisciplinary training and mindset. The position will play a crucial role leading different projects funded by academic grants as well as industry partners and working with a team of other research associates PhD students as well as staff scientists. 

The scope of work includes:

  • Establishing and applying tailored modular microfluidic platform
  • Isolation, culture, and characterization of immune cells

  • Planning, conducting and analyzing assays using OoC models
  • Evaluation of immune phenotypes in the platform
  • Presentation and publication of research results

Requirements

  • Completed PhD in natural sciences or engineering

  • Previous postdoctoral experience in academic or industry research is an advantage
  • Comprehensive practical experience in (primary, stem cell) cell culture, microfluidics and microscopy
  • In-depth bioengineering knowledge either with focus on microfabrication or on immunoengineering
  • Experience with Organ-on-chip is desirable
  • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research activities (life science and engineering)
  • Very good knowledge of English as well as a structured, independent way of working
